Open Token vs Langfuse

Langfuse is a popular open-source LLM engineering platform for tracing, evals and prompt management, available as a cloud service or self-hosted. Cloud plans start at US$29 per month with unlimited users, and usage is billed per 100,000 units.

Where Open Token is different

  • A gateway that meters every call: budget alerts and runaway detection as it happens today, with in-path stopping on our roadmap. Langfuse observes but doesn't sit in the request path.

  • Model cost is measured on every call before any sampling, so sampling does not change those cost numbers. The trace fee counts only stored AI traces, so a trace sampling drops is not billed and does not reduce the bill. In Langfuse, sampling happens in the client and unsent traces disappear from cost views.

  • Views built for finance: attribution to team, feature and customer, costs reconciled with your AWS invoice, and chargeback with FOCUS exports on Business and Enterprise.

When Langfuse is the better fit

  • You want to self-host an open-source tool, or your main need is evals and prompt management.
  • You only need observability for a small workload: Langfuse alone is cheaper, without a gateway or budgets.

Using both

Open Token can export traces to Langfuse, so engineers keep their eval workflow while finance and platform teams govern spend.
